On Saturday the 18th of June, Queensland’s “sunny’’ Gold Coast hosted it’s first ever Free Cannabis 420 picnic.
Charismatic Chris Hindi, from the Drug Law reform Party, NSW organised the event along with the Australian Sex Party, MCUA, Liberal Democrats and Free Cannabis Australia. Although rain threatened through-out the day, the weather held out and supporters enjoyed a chill day of music (from Merging Roots and Satisvibes) comedy, spliff rolling competitions (with damiana of course) and a smoke off.
Free Cannabis 420 picnics are organised around Australian to bring awareness to the many benefits of legalising marijuana. Cannabis is a very versatile plant that can be used for eco friendlier fuel, fibre, to make durable textile and rope. Hemp seed provides more protein than beef, and plenty of omega 3s.
Medicinally marijuana is a safer alternative to many pharmaceuticals. Cannabis oil has been successfully used to treat epilepsy, cataracts, some cancers and anxiety disorders.
As a crop cannabis is fast growing and can product a large armount of product in a little amount of space, making it extremely sustainable and eco friendly. The only emissions a weed plant produces is lovely fresh oxygen.
There was a significant Police presence on the day, Officers remained vigilant but mostly stayed out of the way and let people enjoy the day. A few I.D checks were carried out, a lady and her suspicious dog passed through the crowd on a number of occasions and one officer seemed to be photographing and filming on his phone. But happily no one went home with fines or charges.
Over all the event was a smoking success, and organisers plan more Free Cannabis 420 Picnics around Australia in the very near future.
