A former Victorian police officer has been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting 9 children during his 12 years as an officer. More disturbing however, is the fact that Victorian Police actually knew about the allegations and did not report them or even bother to follow them up accordingly. The paedophile, whos name has been suppressed by the courts, has recently pleaded guilty to 18 offences being committed against 9 different children. Some of the victims were as young as 5 years old and other victims over this period of time included his own stepchildren.
Victorian Police officers received a complaint from a woman, saying that her son had been raped by their colleague. The officer in question was not penalised, charged or removed from the service, despite VPS assuring her that he would no longer be a police officer. It wasn’t until 1979 when he was forced to resign, the courts heard. He was not charged at this time either, until he pleaded guilty for this in early June of 2016. After being dismissed from the Police service in 1979, the paedophile gained employment in the private sector, going on to sexually assault children for another four years, the court heard.
On one particular occasion heard by the court , a young girl attended the police station for help after losing her mother at a nearby festival. The officer said he would look after her and gave her assurance that she was safe. He admittedly then took her into the back of a police van and forced her to perform oral sex on him. The officer used his uniform to gain the trust of the children he molested and there was reason to believe that other officers, knowingly failed to report these serious allegations.
The former police officers stepdaughter, gave her testimony to the court in June and described her disturbing experiences. The court heard how her stepdad held a police revolver to her head while raping her. She wept while remembering how she hoped he would pull the trigger and put her out of her misery. Instead, he forced her to suffer through years of “hell and his sick games”. She told the court that her own school was not a safe refuge, she went on to say to the court ““He would show up in police uniform, in the police car, police revolver … all the other kids thought it was cool”.
She described how, when she was nine, she went to her grandmother due to hemorrhaging. The family initially thought she was having her first period; instead, a doctor suggested it was a miscarriage. She testified that when she was 15, her grandfather helped her go to police and report the abuse, but was told the man “would probably get off because he was an ex-cop”.
“He is a monster,” she raged in court. “He needs to never see the light of day again … once a monster always a monster – he will never change.”
Police defending paedophiles within their own ranks is nothing new to Australia. Stories like these just go to show that there is a serious lack of oversight when it comes to police corruption. It turns out that the Victorian Police did not start investigating the matter until 2011, decades later. He was not arrested until 2012 and is currently serving a sentence for crimes of similar nature, the paedophile is due to be sentenced in court for the 18 offences in the coming days ahead.
