Earlier this year it was announced that the Australian parliament – with bi-partisan support – had effectively legalised medical cannabis, by including Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act, which permit both legally-grown cannabis for the manufacture of medicinal cannabis products in Australia. For the very first time in history under a new federal scheme, Australians will have legal access to lifesaving medication, that rivals the pharmaceutical giants overseas. The Therapeutic Goods Administration has stated this week that medical cannabis will be legal, but “highly regulated”. the decision was made official this week, steps have already been made toward the creation of a nation regulator.
Classifying cannabis as a dangerous substance and an illicit drug, was one of the most blatant and bold frauds ever perpetrated on society. Thousands of Australians have died from not having access to the right medication, hundreds more have been convicted or jailed for attempting to self medicate illegally. It really is too little too late for so many Australians, although we can at least embrace the fact that positive developments have been made. Non-medicinal cannabis will still be illegal, similar products for therapeutic use will be listed on the Schedule 8 list – for restricted drugs (e.g morphine), so be sure to expect harsh punishments if you intend to self medicate without a prescription. New South Wales will be the first state to be given approval to grow cannabis under a restricted licence from the federal government, as part of research into improving cultivation.
The state government is currently conducting three clinical trials of the efficacy of medical marijuana, for treating conditions like ‘intractable childhood epilepsy’ and ‘chemotherapy-related nausea’. Health minister Sussan Ley said
“it was an historic day for the nation and the people who fought long and hard to challenge the stigma around medicinal cannabis products so genuine patients are no longer treated as criminals”.
Cannabis as medicine and therapy could reinvent the health system as we know it. we are already witnessing the proof first hand in the United States, Portugal and even Israel, that Cannabis is a miracle drug, not an illicit one. There is already conclusive evidence showing hemp seed oil curing most forms of cancer and an abundance of other diseases. We currently waste millions of tax-payer dollars trying to enforce prohibition, when it is shown a complete legalisation of cannabis (recreational, industrial and medical) actually decreases crime rates, creates jobs and helps addresses environmental concerns on CO2 levels. A regulated market open to recreational and industrial use would redirect billions of dollars back into our economy.
The only people who are preventing us from complete legalisation are the lobbyists for the pharmaceutical and oil industries. Hundreds of families across Australia are breaking the law by using medical marijuana, yet the Australian Medical Association says there isn’t enough evidence to support full legalisation (which is a load of crap).
